---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunOS Media Transition SunFLASH Vol 36 #23 December 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - SunOS 4.1.2 available on CD-ROM *only* - Default SunOS transitions to SunOS 4.1.2 in January - Default marketing part numbers for tapes are obsolete SunOS 4.1.2 is offered on CD-ROM only for all SPARC platforms. When SunOS 4.1.2 becomes the default OS in January, 1992, the default marketing part numbers for tapes will be obsolete. In order to ensure customers receive the desired OS release after this transition, SunOS 4.1.1 on tapes will only be orderable using the release specific marketing part numbers. Customers who want the SunOS media to match the OS pre-installed on Desktop SPARCstations during the transition must order CDs (SX-21 or USX-21). Prior to this transition, SunOS 4.1.2 CD and documentation is orderable using release specific part numbers and will begin shipping early December. SunOS PRODUCTS in TRANSISTION ----------------------------- SunOS 4.1.1 is the last release on 1/4" and 1/2" tapes. Effective immediately, the default SunOS marketing part numbers listed below are no longer quotable. Orders will not be accepted after December 28, 1992. After the default transition in January, all backlog default orders for 1/4" or 1/2" tape will be filled with SunOS 4.1.1 product. To continue ordering SunOS 4.1.1, use the release specific marketing part numbers. Q. Why is SunOS 4.1.2 not available on 1/4" tape? A. Distribution solely on CD-ROM is part of Sun's corporate strategy. System software shipments on CD-ROM have steadily increased while 1/4" tape shipments have decreased in the last year; therefore, SunOS 4.1.2 was chosen as an appropriate cutover to CD-ROM only. In addition, Sun has been shipping CD drives with all servers for some time in order to promote this strategy. Q. What about the Sun 3 platforms that don't support a CD drive? A. In keeping with "all the wood behind one arrow" strategy, SunOS 4.1.2 is only for SPARC platforms. On a network, Sun3 platforms can remain at SunOS 4.1.1 and are perfectly compatible with SPARC platforms running SunOS 4.1.2. Q. Which SunOS media products automatically roll over to SunOS 4.1.2? A. The only products which roll over are SunOS 4.1.2 on CD (SX-21 and USX-21) and SunOS 4.1.2 Encryption Kit (SX-E-20). All other SunOS tape products will continue shipping as SunOS 4.1.1 even after the transition.
