---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN AND LYNX TO OFFER REAL-TIME SOLUTIONS FOR THE MANUFACTURING MARKET SunFLASH Vol 30 #14 June 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --June 17, 1991-- Sun Microsystems and Lynx Real-Time Systems have signed a marketing agreement under which Lynx will port LynxOS(TM), its real-time UNIX(R) operating system, to Sun's SPARC(R)-based workstations and SPARCengine(TM) embedded board products. LynxOS will be the only third-party real-time operating system that is completely compatible with SunOS(TM), Sun's standard UNIX operating system. Customers running LynxOS on Sun systems will be able to use available SPARCware(TM) applications without modification or recompilation. Sun is also investing in real-time extensions for SunOS that will meet many real-time requirements. These include a preemptive kernel, enabling quick system response. The extensions will be part of Sun's System V Release 4 (SVR4) version of SunOS, available by the end of this year. Customers whose speed or other requirements cannot be addressed by SunOS will have the option of selectively using LynxOS. Sun and Lynx expect these solutions to be particularly attractive to the real-time industrial manufacturing market, which requires the immediate, guaranteed response time UNIX has not traditionally been able to deliver. They are also expected to be popular for military and embedded systems. Today's real-time industrial process control environment often consists of embedded boards controlling, diagnosing and gathering data from separate processes attached to supervisory computers managing the entire system. SPARCengine boards and SPARC-based workstations fit very well into this arena. The availability of LynxOS along with SunOS on Sun(TM) systems and boards will provide seamless integration and a high degree of flexibility in implementing manufacturing systems. SPARCengine boards running LynxOS or SunOS can provide fast and deterministic response for data acquisition, process control and on-line diagnostics, while Sun workstations running SunOS or LynxOS can be used to supervise and manage the overall system. These systems can network seamlessly with other Sun computer sytems within the organization handling inventory/production control, CAD/CAM, MRP and executive information management. In addition to running real-time applications, Sun workstations can be used to develop real-time applications that execute on SPARCengine boards or other embedded target systems. Cross-development packages running on SPARCstation(TM) workstations are available now from Lynx for Intel and Motorola chip families and will be available for SPARC-based targets in early 1992. LynxOS for Sun's SPARCstation 2 will be available in early 1992. The SPARC version of LynxOS will be binary compatible with SVR4 SunOS. Applications for this solution can be developed now on Sun's developer's release of its SVR4 operating system and will run unmodified without recompilation when LynxOS is available. Sun Microsystems is the world's leading supplier of client/server computing solutions, which feature networked workstations and servers that store, process and distribute information. Used for many demanding commercial and technical applications, Sun's products command the largest share of the computer industry's fastest-growing market segment: workstations and servers. The company, founded in 1982 and headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a multi-billion dollar corporation doing business worldwide. Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc., headquartered in Los Gatos, Calif., is the leading supplier of true, real-time operating systems that are fully compatible with industry standard versions of UNIX, and the only one to support the proposed IEEE POSIX real-time extensions to UNIX.
