CDPD is an open specification designed to enable customers to send computer data over an enhanced cellular-based packet data network. SunConnect's management services will help keep McCaw's CDPD infrastructure performing at its optimal level, keeping the network reliable and available. The network integration, planning and implementation work provided by SunNetworks, Sun Microsystems' new network architecture and integration group, will utilize new cooperative management technology from SunConnect. McCaw chose SunConnect because of its proven track record and leading network management technology, and, SunConnect's readiness to shape new products to meet McCaw's resource management needs. Through its SunNet Manager platform, SunConnect also delivers immediate access to the largest, most comprehensive set of management applications available. McCaw chose SunNetworks for its unique ability to provide a single point of integration for both Sun Microsystems and third-party vendors. The group's focused expertise in architecting and implementing networks allows commercial businesses to apply strategic networking technology to be more competitive in the global marketplace. "Through their superior and responsive network management and integration capabilities, SunConnect and SunNetworks are helping McCaw provide CDPD network services unparalleled by any other carrier," said Rob Mechaley, senior vice president and general manager of McCaw's Wireless Data Division. "Customers want to use wireless data service when and where they need it. They don't want to think about how it works or worry if it will. With this alliance, McCaw is able to ensure our CDPD customers will be using a high-quality wireless data network that is reliable, always operational and performing at its best. What's more, no other CDPD network can currently make these claims." "Sharing resource information between management consoles is another step in the expansion of the SunNet Manager platform's capabilities and SunConnect's cooperative management technology," said Denis Yaro, vice president and general manager of SunConnect. "SunConnect is the first company to actively target and deliver cooperative management solutions in the telecommunications market. McCaw is the first company to actively build and deploy CDPD technology. Working together, we've taken a forward thinking approach that will allow customers to implement CDPD resources and applications quickly with the assurance of complete reliability. Also, the plan can serve as a model for other telecommunication companies looking to enter this market. This will help accelerate the growth and use of CDPD technology." "SunNetworks is working closely with McCaw to incorporate the most strategic technology solutions into their heterogenous network environment," said Mark Freund, managing director, SunNetworks. "SunNetworks, as a team of experienced network design engineers, is leading the McCaw effort to select and implement working prototypes of the industry's best networking management, high speed and mobile communication technologies into a tightly- woven interoperable CDPD platform. "The design utilizes SPARC technology from Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation, as well as hardware and software solutions from SunConnect and industry partners," Freund added. Cooperative Management Developments The products will include full Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP) support and will provide a common look and feel among different applications. McCaw's CDPD administrators will be able to manage segments or domains of the system from one console while sharing the same management information with another. For example, when an administrator responsible for a small segment of the system makes a change in a hub or router, the administrator responsible for all hubs and routers in the entire system will immediately receive the updated information.
