SunLink PPP 2.0 enables Sun(TM) customers to easily communicate outside their local area networks. It allows Sun nodes to route IP traffic over point-to-point networks by using the Internet standard Point-to-Point Protocol. SunLink PPP 2.0 uses a compression algorithm and load sharing for bandwidth optimization. The Point-to-Point Protocol interconnects stand-alone systems and Local Area Networks (LANs) to create a Wide Area Network (WAN). SunLink PPP 2.0 is a standard implementation of the Point-to-Point Protocol. It interconnects TCP/IP systems and networks using dedicated synchronous links, and is compatible with SunLink PPP 1.0 and all other standard implementations of PPP. SunLink PPP 2.0 offers the highest performance on the market, with data transfer rates of up to 2.048 Mb/sec. over a high-speed interface. Performance is further enhanced by load-sharing - a Sun-specific enhancement that shares data transmission over multiple links to increase the available bandwidth. SunLink PPP 2.0 provides smooth, effective routing of IP traffic over point-to-point networks and supports all Sun EIA-232-C and EIA-449 serial ports, removing the need for expensive hardware modifications. Configuring point-to-point links with SunLink PPP 2.0 has been greatly simplified by the inclusion of ppptool, a graphical user interface (GUI) based configuration tooldeveloped for SunLink PPP. In addition, SunLink PPP 2.0 features a SunNet Manager(TM) agent that enables you to monitor point-to-point networks from a single central Sun station running SunNet Manager. An upgrade from SunLink PPP 1.0 to SunLink PPP 2.0 is available. SunLink PPP 1.0 will continue to be offered by SMCC to provide a Point to Point Protocol product for Solaris 1.x systems. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ SunLink PPP 2.0 requires Solaris 2.2 or above and a SPARC(R) system with an available serial port. SunLink HSI/S 2.0 may be optionally purchased to provide enhanced performance. AVAILABILITY ------------ SunLink PPP 2.0 can be ordered and is shipping immediately.
