Premium Color Monitor SunFLASH Vol 59 #11 November 1993 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 59.11 New Low Emission 20-in. Premium Color Monitor Sun's flagship color monitor: a new 20-in.display with industry leading low emissions, high performance, compact/distinctive design ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun Microsystems Computer Company (SMCC) introduces its new 20-in. premium color monitor. This new monitor is an improved next-generation replacement for its current best-seller, the 19-in. color monitor. It incorporates industry-leading performance characteristics, full standards compliance, and a signature Sun industrial design. It is stereo- and multi-media-ready. It also has a digital chassis for superb manufacturing quality -- most adjustments are done without manual intervention. The new 20-in. color monitor offers a unique Sun advantage for customers who are sensitive to the effects electromagnetic emissions: it is possibly the only monitor from a workstation or PC supplier that supports the very stringent TCO standard for very low emissions. The emissions from this new TCO-compliant monitor are approximately one half of emissions from MPR 1990:10 compliant monitors currently available from other workstation and PC suppliers. The new 20-in. color monitor is the most compact 20-in. monitor in the industry, but it offers a very large usable screen area. The viewable screen area on the 20-in. monitor is more than 90% of the size of the typical 21-in. screen. The new monitor has the following features: - industry-leading performance characteristics: better focus, improved color purity, tighter convergence - industry-leading emissions controls: MPR 1990:10, TCO - unique and very compact Sun industrial design: much smaller volume, larger screen/bezel size, recessed cables allowing monitor to be flush to wall, fits with SPARCstation(TM) 10 look - industry-standard resolutions/frequencies: 1280 x 1024 @ 76Hz and 1152 x 900 @ 76Hz - digital chassis and remote control: better quality control, remote control has more functions than the previous knobs; RS232 interface to devices - improved magnetic field shielding: less affected by ambient magnetic fields - stereo-ready and multi-media compatible - lower power consumption/"green monitor": with future software support, it is compatible with EPA EnergyStar requirements To be global-ready, the 20-in. monitor has an auto-ranging power supply. It is manufactured by the same vendor as the previous 19-in. monitor, and has aperture-grille Trinitron technology. Despite the improvements, SMCC has not changed the monitor price. AVAILABILITY ------------ This product can be ordered and is shipping immediatley. The monitor has already started shipping with the ZX and TurboGXplus(TM) configurations in August 1993. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q: What are the differences between the 19-in. Premium Color Monitor and the 20-in. Premium Color Monitor? A: The 20-in. color monitor has the following advantages over the old 19-in.: 20-in. 19-in. ------ ------ MPR 1990:10 Yes Only in separate Euro version TCO Yes No Resolution/timing 1280 x 1024 @ 76 Hz 1280 x 1024 @ 67 Hz 1280 x 1024 @ 66 Hz 1152 x 900 @ 66/76 Hz 1152 x 900 @ 66/76 Hz Bezel opening 365 x 288 mm 360 x 283 mm Stereo-capable Yes No Digital Chassis Yes, RS 232 Interface No User Controls Full tilt controls No Remote Control No Focus, purity, convergence Excellent Very good Power Consumption 130 Watts 155 Watts Q: What are MPR 1990:10 and TCO regulations? Do these guarantee that a user will not suffer any ill effects from monitor emissions? A: MPR 1990:10 is the latest in a series of emissions requirements adopted by the Swedish government. It is becoming widely adopted in many countries in Europe as well as in the US. Many suppliers have begun offering MPR 1990:10 in their products. TCO is an even stricter standard for low electromagnetic emissions, which the Swedish trade unions have adopted. SMCC is proud to be one of the few, if not the only, supplier of TCO compliant monitors amongst system suppliers. As emissions concerns become more visible, Sun will continue to offer innovative solutions. It is up to the relevant authorities to determine the health effects of monitor emissions and to create appropriate regulations. Sun, as a responsible corporate citizen, strives to produce monitor products that are compatible with these regulations. Q: What is Sun's plan for MPR compliance for its other monitors? A: Sun has considered MPR 1990:10 compliance an important requirement for all its new monitor products since 1992. As for older products, Sun is exploring the most efficient ways of providing compliance. Q: What is Sun's plan for TCO compliance for its other monitors? A: There is growing interest in Europe for monitors that comply with TCO emissions limits. Sun will consider this for inclusion into all its monitors products where possible. Q: How does the 20-in. monitor compare to the old 21-in. Sun monitor? A: The usable viewing area on the 20-in. monitor is over 90% of the size of the usable viewing area on the old 21" monitor. By using the remote control, the user can easily expand the viewing area on the 20-in. monitor to cover the entire bezel opening. Because of the improved performance characteristics of the 20-in. monitor, there is no distortion even when the viewing area is thus stretched to its maximum. Q: Is the 20-in. monitor meant only for ZX and TurboGXplus systems? A: No, it will be the default high-end monitor replacing the 19-in. monitor on all systems. The ZX and TurboGXplus systems were the first systems to ship with the 20-in. monitor; cutover to other systems is taking place as production rampup and inventory reduction occur. There will not be any changes in order numbers. Q: Is there a Southern Hemisphere version of the 20-in. color monitor? A: Yes, for the convenience of countries below the equator, a Southern Hemisphere version optimized for the local geo-magnetic fields is being created and will be released in the near future.
